In a significant shift, Snapchat is now monetizing its Memories feature, which has served users as a digital archive for nearly ten years. The popular social media platform has announced that users will have free access to 5GB of storage for their Memories. Once this limit is exceeded, users will need to opt for one of the newly introduced paid storage plans. According to an email sent to TechCrunch, Snapchat's entry-level plan offers 100GB of storage for just $1.99 per month. For users subscribed to Snapchat+, a $3.99 monthly fee will provide up to 250GB of storage. Meanwhile, Snapchat Platinum users can access a whopping 5TB of storage for $15.99 each month. Snapchat acknowledged that when it launched the Memories feature, it did not anticipate the staggering growth it would experience, with users having saved over 1 trillion Memories to date. In a blog post, the company expressed, "Transitioning from a free service to a paid model can be challenging, but we believe the value of Memories justifies the cost." They also mentioned that these changes are essential for continuing to enhance the Memories experience for their users. To ease the transition, Snapchat will temporarily provide 12 months of additional Memories storage for users who exceed the 5GB limit. Furthermore, users have the option to download their Memories directly to their devices. If users exceed the storage limit without subscribing to a plan, the oldest Snaps will be retained while the most recent ones that surpass the limit will be deleted. Notably, the company indicated that the majority of users will not be affected by this change, as most have less than 5GB of stored Memories. This new strategy allows Snapchat to manage rising infrastructure costs while still offering free access to the majority of its user base.
