At the Augmented World Expo 2025, Snap Inc. made a significant announcement regarding its upcoming Spectacles, known simply as "Specs," which are slated for a public release in 2026. These innovative glasses are designed to be lightweight yet powerful, functioning as wearable computers with transparent lenses that seamlessly integrate augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life. Evan Spiegel, the co-founder and CEO of Snap, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming launch, stating, "We believe the time is right for a revolution in computing that naturally integrates our digital experiences with the physical world. We couldn't be more excited about the extraordinary progress in artificial intelligence and augmented reality that is enabling new, human-centered computing experiences. We believe Specs are the most advanced personal computer in the world, and we can’t wait for you to see for yourself." Snap has committed over $3 billion and 11 years of research and development to bring Specs to fruition. Unlike traditional smartphones that limit digital engagement to flat screens, these glasses are engineered for a spatial, intuitive, and hands-free computing experience. Users will be able to browse, stream, interact, and play without the need to reach for a device. The fifth-generation Spectacles, released in 2024 for developers, set the stage for this consumer-ready version. Snap's AR platform already boasts over 8 billion daily lens interactions, supported by 400,000 developers creating over 4 million unique lenses. Specs will utilize advanced machine learning to comprehend the environment, providing context-aware assistance, game overlays, and creative tools. Whether you're cooking, traveling, or exploring, Specs aim to enhance real-life experiences with digital interactions. Some applications currently in development include: - **Super Travel (Gowaaa)**: Translates signs, menus, and currencies for international travelers. - **Drum Kit (Paradiddle)**: Offers visual guides for drum lessons. - **Cookmate (Headraft)**: Provides recipes and step-by-step cooking help. - **Pool Assist (Studio ANRK)**: Helps users devise strategies in real time while playing pool. - **Wisp World (Liquid City)**: Enables imaginative explorations powered by AR. Additionally, Snap introduced updates to its Snap OS and Lens Studio tools. These enhancements include deep integrations with OpenAI and Google’s Gemini, allowing developers to create multimodal AI-powered experiences using speech, vision, and context. The new Depth Module API ensures precise 3D anchoring of digital content in the real world, while the Snap3D API facilitates real-time generation of 3D objects in AR. Furthermore, the Speech Recognition API offers real-time transcription capabilities in more than 40 languages, featuring high accuracy for non-native accents. New tools such as a Fleet Management app for overseeing multiple Specs devices, a Guided Mode for immersive location-based experiences, and Guided Navigation for AR-enhanced museum and city tours have also been announced. Snap is collaborating with Niantic to introduce a Spatial VPS (Visual Positioning System) for Specs, creating a collective AI-enhanced map of the world. WebXR support will simplify testing and deployment of AR experiences for developers. Companies like Enklu, which operates Verse Immersive theaters in the U.S., are already integrating Specs into their entertainment offerings, with initial implementations available in Chicago where customers can play SightCraft, with plans to expand to more cities. Developers interested in creating AR applications for Specs can sign up for early access at spectacles.com/lens-studio.
