Snap Inc. has revealed its ambitious plans to launch a sixth generation of augmented reality glasses, named Specs, in 2026. This announcement comes as the competition in the smart glasses arena intensifies. Breaking from its previous Spectacles branding, Snap indicated that the new Specs will be designed to be smaller and lighter than earlier models. Although the company has yet to disclose specifics regarding pricing or an exact release date, anticipation is building among tech enthusiasts. The last iteration of Snap’s Spectacles, aimed exclusively at developers, was introduced in September 2024 through a leasing model priced at $99 per month for one year. In contrast, the upcoming consumer-centric Specs will operate on Snap's proprietary Snap OS. Notably, developers will have the flexibility to integrate Google's Gemini AI models into their applications, expanding the range of AI tools available beyond the previously utilized OpenAI's GPT models. CEO Evan Spiegel expressed enthusiasm about the advancements in artificial intelligence and augmented reality, emphasizing how these technologies are paving the way for more intuitive computing experiences. Since the debut of the original Spectacles in 2016, which offered basic functionalities for capturing short videos, Snap has progressively enhanced its glasses with augmented reality capabilities. The 2021 update allowed users to experience digital imagery superimposed onto the real world. The landscape for head-mounted computing devices has become increasingly competitive, with Apple launching its $3,500 Vision Pro goggles in February 2024 and Meta introducing an array of innovative products, including the Quest VR headsets and Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses. Additionally, Google is entering the market with a $150 million partnership with Warby Parker, planning to release its own smart glasses later this year. As the AR revolution unfolds, Snap aims to position itself at the forefront of this transformative technology.
