Snap spins off AI video team into new company, Dotmo, due to costs

Snap Inc. has announced the creation of a new company named Dotmo, which will be formed from its internal generative AI video team. This strategic move aims to alleviate the financial pressures associated with developing AI technologies in-house. Dotmo is set to concentrate on crafting AI models that enhance interactive gaming experiences. Despite being established as an independent entity, Dotmo will maintain a collaborative relationship with Snap. The parent company plans to provide Dotmo with a license to utilize its technology for gaming and interactive entertainment. The founding team of Dotmo will consist of current Snap employees who are transitioning to this new venture. Although Dotmo will not receive direct funding from Snap, Bobby Murphy, Snap's Chief Technology Officer, will serve as the lead investor and retain a significant stake in the company while continuing his full-time role at Snap. In return for its technology and talent, Snap will acquire a substantial equity share in Dotmo, potentially reaping benefits if the new company flourishes. While Dotmo may explore external funding opportunities down the line, Snap's recent developments illustrate a broader strategy of optimizing its resources. This initiative marks Snap's second significant spinoff this year, following the launch of Specs, a company dedicated to smart glasses development. However, the introduction of Specs faced challenges, including a dip in Snap's stock due to concerns over its high price point of approximately $2,200. Additionally, Snap has made headlines for recent layoffs, cutting around 1,000 jobs earlier this year. Unlike the Specs venture, Dotmo's focus on digital experiences that lie outside Snap's immediate business goals signifies a fresh approach. The spinoff strategy can provide various benefits for companies, such as showcasing valuable assets and enhancing operational flexibility. By establishing Dotmo, Snap is not only reducing the financial strain of its AI projects but also ensuring it remains poised to benefit from any future success of the new company.
