Memory crunch, supply shocks set stage for smartphone, laptop price hikes in India

India's consumer electronics sector is bracing for a wave of price hikes, particularly for smartphones and laptops, as rising memory costs and supply chain disruptions put pressure on manufacturers. Industry experts highlight that the increasing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure is leading to shortages in essential memory components like DRAM and NAND flash, which in turn is driving up costs for device manufacturers reliant on imports. According to Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research, the surge in prices for DRAM, NAND memory, and display components is escalating production costs for smartphones and PCs. This situation makes it increasingly challenging for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to uphold competitive pricing strategies across various market segments. Singh noted that smartphones and laptops are particularly at risk due to their heavy reliance on imported semiconductors, memory chips, display panels, and batteries—all of which are currently affected by ongoing disruptions in the supply chain. Abhilash Kumar, Lead Research Advisor at Smart Analytics Global, indicated that the impact of these price hikes will differ based on factors such as product positioning and profitability. He added that entry-level smartphones and laptops would likely experience the most significant price increases, influenced by specifications like RAM size and overall retail price. Recent data from Counterpoint's smartphone price tracker reveals that the Rs 10,000 - Rs 20,000 price bracket has faced the most substantial increases, with over 50 models experiencing price hikes of 3% to 28% since March, resulting in an uptick of approximately Rs 500 to Rs 4,000 per device. Brands such as OPPO, Samsung, realme, and POCO have been notably affected. The Rs 20,000 - Rs 30,000 segment has also seen over 40 models affected, with price increases ranging from 3% to 19%. Even budget smartphones priced under Rs 10,000 have not escaped the trend, recording increases of 6% to 25%. Laptop prices from major brands like Dell, HP, and Lenovo have surged by 15% to 30% this year as manufacturers contend with rising component costs. With DRAM prices nearly doubling over the past year and further increases anticipated, the cost pressure on PC makers is expected to intensify. Singh forecasts that laptops may experience more pronounced price hikes compared to smartphones due to higher average selling prices and larger memory configurations, which amplify the impact of increasing memory costs. While the premium segment is not entirely shielded from rising costs, analysts suggest that these devices are better equipped to absorb price increases. Smartphones priced above Rs 30,000 have seen modest increases ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 across various brands. Despite global brands like Apple attempting to absorb some of the cost increases to maintain consumer demand, this strategy may soon become unsustainable, as Singh points out. Beyond the immediate price hikes, analysts caution that a demand slowdown poses a significant risk for manufacturers and retailers. India's electronics industry remains heavily dependent on imported components, making it susceptible to global supply chain challenges and geopolitical tensions. Retailers are reportedly more concerned about a potential slowdown in consumer demand than outright supply shortages, anticipating that higher prices could lead consumers to postpone purchases. With memory prices expected to stay elevated and supply chain issues showing little sign of resolution, experts predict that India’s consumer electronics market will continue to face challenges in the upcoming quarters, leading to higher prices for consumers across various product categories.
