In Warsaw, Indiana, Slate Auto is gearing up to launch a budget-friendly electric pickup truck, designed to cater to those seeking an EV without the extra features that often come with modern vehicles. This innovative pickup, stripped of components like an infotainment screen and lane-keeping assistance, emphasizes simplicity and affordability. The unpainted modular design allows for extensive customization post-production, giving owners the flexibility to personalize their vehicles. The production site, previously occupied by the RR Donnelley & Sons printing plant, has a rich history of distributing catalogs for major retailers before ceasing operations in 2023. Now, this facility will transform into a customer center and potential delivery hub for Slate Auto. While the company is exploring options for customers to collect their vehicles directly from the factory, details regarding delivery fees remain unconfirmed. During a recent event, CEO Chris Barman announced plans to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2026 at their 1.4 million square-foot facility. He highlighted that the Slate pickup will be assembled using a mere 600 parts, a stark contrast to traditional pickups which can have up to 6,000. Notably, the absence of a paint shop and large stamping processes contributes to the streamlined assembly approach, making the facility an ideal choice for Slate's operations.
