Slate Auto says each $24,950 electric pickup truck will be profitable as it aims to be cash-flow positive next...

In the competitive landscape of electric vehicles, Slate Auto is setting its sights high, aiming to achieve profitability with its innovative electric pickup truck priced at $24,950. The startup, backed by notable investors including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, believes it can navigate the difficulties that have plagued other EV manufacturers. CEO Peter Faricy expressed confidence during an interview at the company’s new design studio near Los Angeles, stating that every vehicle produced will contribute positively to gross margins. This strategy is geared towards achieving positive free cash flow and EBITDA by 2027. "It’s an ambitious goal," Faricy acknowledged. "But we believe in setting lofty targets to drive significant achievements." While many recent entrants in the electric vehicle market have encountered financial hurdles, Slate is optimistic about its unique approach. With a straightforward product lineup and a customer-focused business model, the company has identified its break-even point at around 80,000 vehicles annually, significantly less than its projected production capacity of 150,000 units at its Indiana assembly plant. Slate’s flagship model is a basic two-seat electric pickup that prioritizes affordability and customization. With features such as optional speakers and manual windows, it can also be transformed into a five-passenger SUV for an additional cost. This vehicle boasts an estimated range of 205 miles, 181 horsepower, and 195 foot-pounds of torque, aligning with its price point compared to other vehicles in the segment. The startup is ramping up operations, having received over 180,000 reservations since opening preorders, which include a $300 nonrefundable deposit. Faricy noted that the SUV variant is expected to account for a significant portion of sales, despite the pickup being the base model. Slate plans to maintain a direct-to-consumer sales model, allowing for better cost control and enhanced customer experience, drawing lessons from the successes of companies like Tesla. As production gears up, the company is focused on launching its vehicles later this year, with plans for deliveries anticipated in the fourth quarter. The modular design of Slate’s vehicles is a notable feature, allowing for various customization options without the complexities often found in traditional automotive manufacturing. With a focus on simplicity and affordability, Slate aims to carve out its niche in a market increasingly dominated by electric and gas-powered trucks. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Slate Auto's ambitious goals and unique offerings could redefine the standard for affordability and customization in the electric vehicle market.
