Slackbot is an AI agent now

Slackbot, the embedded assistant within Salesforce's messaging platform Slack, is evolving into an advanced AI agent. Salesforce's Chief Technology Officer, Parker Harris, envisions this new iteration becoming as popular as OpenAI's ChatGPT. On Tuesday, the cloud software leader unveiled the latest version of Slackbot, now available for Business+ and Enterprise+ users. This enhanced AI agent can perform a variety of tasks including information retrieval, email drafting, and meeting scheduling, all seamlessly integrated within the Slack environment. Additionally, it can interact with other enterprise tools like Microsoft Teams and Google Drive, provided it has the necessary permissions. This capability allows users to navigate multiple enterprise applications without leaving the Slack interface. Salesforce, alongside its competitors in the enterprise software space, is heavily investing in AI technologies to maintain and expand its market presence. The revamped Slackbot, first announced during Salesforce's Dreamforce conference in October, represents a key element of the company's AI-focused product strategy. According to Harris, this next-generation Slackbot is a significant departure from its predecessor, retaining its name due to its established recognition. Unlike typical product updates, which Slack rarely releases, this new feature is designed to drive user adoption. "It is an agent, it is a super agent that is your employee agent," Harris stated. He emphasized that the new Slackbot is powered by generative AI, offering a carefully crafted and curated experience that users will appreciate. Before launching products like Slackbot, Salesforce conducts extensive internal testing, with Harris humorously noting that they prefer to 'drink their own champagne' first. He highlighted that Slackbot has become one of the most widely adopted internal tools they've introduced, indicating a strong product-market fit. Looking ahead, Harris expressed excitement about the possibilities for Slackbot's future. Plans include expanding its functionalities beyond text-based interactions within Slack, potentially incorporating voice capabilities and internet browsing features. "I am very confident that investing in Slackbot will not only benefit Slack but will also be advantageous for the entire company," he concluded, signaling a promising evolution for this AI assistant.
