American Airlines picks SpaceX's Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 500 planes

American Airlines has announced its decision to equip over 500 of its narrow-body aircraft with SpaceX's Starlink technology, marking another significant achievement for Elon Musk's venture in the airline industry. This choice comes after a thorough evaluation process where Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper were considered, with the airline confirming its commitment on Tuesday. The installation will commence early next year, focusing on approximately 500 Airbus A321neo aircraft. An American Airlines spokesperson clarified that there are no immediate plans to transition the Boeing fleet, which currently utilizes a combination of Viasat and Panasonic for its connectivity needs. In January, American Airlines began offering complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi for its frequent flyer program members, following suit with competitors like United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Delta recently announced its decision to adopt Amazon's Project Kuiper for its in-flight internet services for hundreds of airplanes starting in 2028. Meanwhile, United, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines have opted for Starlink as well. As airlines compete to attract premium customers, upgrading from outdated and slow in-flight internet to faster options has become a priority. Additionally, some carriers are exploring alternative revenue methods through personalized advertising aimed at passengers. On the horizon, SpaceX is gearing up for a potential record-setting IPO next month. The connectivity division, which encompasses Starlink, reported revenue of $11.39 billion last year, contributing to 61% of SpaceX's total sales, as indicated in a recent IPO filing.
