Massive bonuses for South Korea's chip workers puts central bank on inflation alert

In a rare twist, the substantial bonuses awarded to South Korean tech workers have captured the attention of the nation’s central bank. Employees in the technology sector, particularly from leading firms, are receiving bonuses that amount to millions of won, leading the Bank of Korea (BOK) to issue warnings regarding potential inflationary pressures. According to a report released on June 17, the BOK highlighted that this year's inflation has been significantly influenced by rising energy prices, a situation exacerbated by geopolitical tensions related to the Iran conflict. However, the bank cautioned that if income levels continue to rise and wage growth becomes more common, inflation could see an upward trajectory. The BOK specifically noted that the recent trend of substantial performance bonuses within major IT companies could trigger broader wage increases, thereby contributing to inflation. Currently, South Korea is grappling with inflation rates above the government's target, with projections indicating an annual inflation rate of 2.7%, surpassing the 2% goal set by the BOK. Reports have emerged detailing the generous bonuses distributed among employees of tech giants, particularly SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. While the exact figures remain undisclosed, SK Hynix has previously committed to allocating 10% of its operating profits as bonuses. Samsung workers negotiated that 10.5% of its semiconductor operating profits would be directed towards special bonuses, following a potential strike threat earlier this year. For instance, a memory chip worker earning a base salary of 80 million won (approximately $52,400) could anticipate a staggering bonus of around 626 million won ($410,000) this year. Furthermore, SK Hynix workers could see bonuses exceeding 700 million won ($454,851) if the company achieves its annual profit target of 250 trillion won, as per calculations by Reuters. Typically, bonuses do not play a significant role in driving demand, as they are not permanent income increases. However, as the BOK pointed out, the unusual scale of these special bonuses could lead to broader wage growth across various sectors, amplifying both supply- and demand-side inflation. In light of this financial windfall, businesses are already gearing up for an increase in consumer spending. BOK Deputy Governor Lee Jiho remarked that sales have surged in regions such as Suwon and luxury goods departments, a trend that could extend further. Reports from South Korean media indicate that tech workers are indulging in luxury purchases, including bags, jewelry, and watches, reflecting a shift in spending habits. In particular, Gyeonggi Province—home to major semiconductor facilities—has seen heightened card spending growth, especially in areas near chip production sites. According to the Chosun Ilbo, luxury consumption in these regions has escalated rapidly, with luxury sales in a Shinsegae department store branch increasing by 53.6% year-on-year. Luxury jewelry sales soared by 146.3%, while luxury watches grew by 85.3% during the same period. As expectations mount for high-end consumption to continue rising, shares of South Korea’s major department store chains have surged. Lotte Shopping has seen its shares increase by over 148% year-to-date, with Hyundai Department Store shares up 120%, and Shinsegae leading with a remarkable 190% gain since the beginning of the year.
