Shares of SK Hynix experienced a remarkable surge of up to 11% on Wednesday, pushing the South Korean semiconductor manufacturer's market value beyond $1 trillion. This impressive growth reflects a growing investor interest in semiconductor stocks linked to artificial intelligence. Since the beginning of the year, SK Hynix has seen its shares soar approximately 250%, driven by an escalating demand for high-bandwidth memory chips essential for AI servers and accelerators. The company has established itself as a pivotal supplier to Nvidia, a leading AI chip manufacturer, solidifying its role in the global AI supply chain. This surge in valuation comes shortly after Samsung Electronics, another domestic powerhouse, also surpassed the $1 trillion mark. On the same day, Samsung's shares rose by more than 6%. Together, these two chip giants represent over 40% of South Korea's benchmark Kospi index, highlighting the close relationship between the index's performance and the global appetite for AI-related semiconductors and memory solutions. According to LSEG data, the Kospi index has nearly doubled in value since January. However, analysts caution that this concentration could increase market volatility, leaving the index vulnerable to various risks such as supply chain disruptions and a potential decline in global data center investments.
