US investors will soon get access to SK Hynix, another memory maker riding the AI boom

SK Hynix, a prominent South Korean memory chip manufacturer and a competitor to both Samsung and the U.S. firm Micron, has announced plans to launch an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States. The company intends to sell approximately 17.8 million shares, which could potentially yield around $28 billion based on the latest closing share price recorded last Friday in Seoul, according to Bloomberg. The IPO will feature American depositary receipts (ADRs), allowing U.S. investors to purchase shares without needing to trade on foreign exchanges. Each ADR will equate to one-tenth of a common share, with prices expected to be set on Thursday, followed by trading commencing on Friday. SK Hynix is currently benefiting from a significant surge in demand driven by the AI boom. The company reported a staggering 200% increase in revenues in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, with its stock value soaring approximately 260% year-to-date. This growth is largely attributed to the memory-intensive nature of AI systems. As major tech players like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle ramp up the development of AI factories and establish new data centers nationwide, the demand for memory chips has skyrocketed, leading to a shortage of essential components such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), DRAM, and NAND chips. This notable deficit has been dubbed “RAMageddon.” The implications of this shortage are already being felt, with Apple announcing price hikes on its Mac computers and iPads as a direct result. In response to the growing demand, South Korean tech giants, including SK Hynix and Samsung, have pledged to invest over $550 billion into expanding manufacturing capabilities. However, this ambitious expansion carries risks, as the evolving needs of AI could render new facilities outdated by the time they are operational, possibly leading to oversupply and plummeting prices. At present, Wall Street is keenly searching for the next major success story akin to Nvidia, with memory chip manufacturers emerging as the most promising contenders. Micron, the closest comparable U.S. firm, has experienced an incredible valuation increase of nearly 700% over the past year, now standing at over $1 trillion, fueled by unprecedented demand for AI-driven memory solutions.
