
South Korea's prominent memory chip manufacturer, SK Hynix, has announced another impressive quarterly performance, achieving record profits and revenues as memory prices escalate in response to heightened demand for artificial intelligence technologies. For the first time, the company's revenue exceeded 50 trillion won during the March quarter, with operating profits nearly doubling compared to the previous quarter. Specializing in memory chips crucial for data storage in a wide array of devices, including servers, smartphones, and laptops, SK Hynix has significantly benefited from a surge in AI-related demand. It stands out as the leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is essential for AI data centers. In its earnings report, SK Hynix emphasized that even though the first quarter typically sees a seasonal slowdown, robust demand has persisted, fueled by increased investments in AI infrastructure. HBM is part of the broader category of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), which is a vital component in PCs, workstations, and servers. SK Hynix has managed to gain an advantage over competitors such as Micron and Samsung in the DRAM sector, largely due to its pioneering position in HBM technology and its close partnership with Nvidia, a leading AI processor manufacturer. Despite SK Hynix's dominance in HBM, Samsung reclaimed the top spot in DRAM revenue during the last quarter of the previous year, as per data from Counterpoint Research. Nonetheless, SK Hynix maintains a commanding 57% market share in the HBM segment. The DRAM market has experienced remarkable growth, with a 30% increase quarter-over-quarter for two consecutive quarters, driven by rising memory prices. The escalating demand for HBM has contributed to a broader memory shortage, leading to increased prices and higher profit margins for memory chip producers. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has indicated that the global chip wafer shortage could continue until 2030, as demand for HBM continues to surpass supply, stressing manufacturing capabilities. He noted that expanding wafer production capacity could take at least four to five years, with anticipated shortfalls projected to exceed 20%.
