SK Hynix bets $13 billion on AI boom with new advanced chip packaging plant

SK Hynix, a prominent memory chip manufacturer based in South Korea, announced a significant investment of 19 trillion Korean won (approximately $12.9 billion) to establish a state-of-the-art advanced packaging facility. This strategic move comes as the company seeks to expand its production capabilities in response to the surging demand for memory chips fueled by the artificial intelligence sector. The new facility will be situated in Cheongju, South Korea, where SK Hynix already has a strong presence. Construction is scheduled to commence in April, with the goal of completing the plant by the end of 2027. As one of the leading producers of memory chips globally, SK Hynix specializes in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component in AI processors, including those developed by Nvidia. This new fabrication plant is expected to significantly enhance SK Hynix's ability to meet the increasing global demand for HBM, especially as competition in the AI field heats up. Industry forecasts referenced by the company indicate that the HBM market is anticipated to grow at a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 33% from 2025 to 2030. However, the shift in focus toward AI-related production has raised concerns about potential shortages in conventional memory chips, which could affect the wider electronics market. To address these challenges, memory manufacturers are actively expanding their production capacities, exemplified by SK Hynix's new facility. Advanced packaging technology enables the integration of multiple memory chips into a single, high-density unit, thereby enhancing performance and energy efficiency while minimizing size. Rival Samsung Electronics has also announced similar plans to increase HBM production in recent months.
