SK Hynix, the renowned South Korean memory manufacturer, made headlines on Wednesday with its announcement to establish a new company in the United States dedicated to artificial intelligence solutions. The company is investing a substantial $10 billion to tap into the burgeoning AI market. This new venture, provisionally named "AI Company or AI Co.," aims to centralize SK Group's AI initiatives and facilitate the acceleration of AI technology in international markets. With its stronghold in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are essential for AI chipsets like those used by Nvidia, SK Hynix has positioned itself as a significant player in the AI landscape. The U.S. expansion is timely, coinciding with a surge in investments from other tech giants in the AI sector, leading to a heightened demand for memory chips. To create this new entity, SK Hynix will restructure its California-based subsidiary, Solidigm, which specializes in enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs) and was established in 2021. Following the restructuring, Solidigm's operations will transition to a new entity called Solidigm Inc. The funding for AI Co. is expected to be allocated on a capital-call basis, with intentions to make additional strategic investments in American AI companies to enhance collaboration within SK Group's various affiliates. This announcement comes on the heels of SK Hynix's impressive fourth-quarter results, which surpassed expectations and were largely driven by ongoing supply shortages in the memory market, leading to increased prices. To meet the rising demand for AI applications, the company has been ramping up its investments, including a commitment of nearly $13 billion to construct a state-of-the-art chip packaging facility in South Korea. Moreover, the establishment of the U.S.-based entity aligns with the current U.S. administration's focus on semiconductor manufacturing. There have been discussions surrounding tariffs on semiconductor companies that do not invest significantly in the U.S. In response to this environment, SK Hynix is also developing a $3.87 billion advanced chip packaging and R&D facility in Indiana, which is expected to produce HBM for AI applications, with operations slated to commence in 2028. Recent dialogues between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korea indicate a willingness to negotiate trade terms, potentially easing tensions that have surrounded tariff discussions.
