In a remarkable financial performance, South Korea's SK Hynix has announced record quarterly revenue and profit, primarily driven by escalating memory prices alongside burgeoning demand from generative AI chipsets. This surge positions the company in a fierce competition with Samsung for dominance in the global memory market. For the December quarter, SK Hynix reported a staggering 66% increase in revenue compared to the same period last year, with operating profit climbing an impressive 137%. The company specializes in manufacturing memory chips, essential for storing data in a wide array of devices, from servers to smartphones and laptops. A significant contributor to this growth has been the increasing demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are integral to powering AI data center servers. HBM is categorized under dynamic random access memory (DRAM), a vital component utilized in PCs, workstations, and servers. According to SK Hynix's earnings report, HBM revenue more than doubled year-over-year, playing a crucial role in the company's outstanding results last year. The demand for HBM has significantly outstripped supply, leading to shortages that are also affecting the less advanced memory chips used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles. As memory prices continue to rise, the shortages are projected to extend into the next year, as SK Hynix and other manufacturers await the completion of capacity expansions. An earnings call with investors is scheduled for Thursday, coinciding with Samsung's own earnings report, further intensifying the competitive landscape in the memory market.
