Nvidia-backed SiFive hits $3.65 billion valuation for open AI chips

SiFive, an innovative company established in 2015 by engineers from UC Berkeley, has successfully completed an oversubscribed funding round, raising $400 million and reaching a valuation of $3.65 billion. This significant investment carries multiple implications for the tech industry, particularly in the realm of open-source chip design. What distinguishes SiFive is its focus on RISC-V architecture, a departure from the dominant x86 and ARM CPU designs that currently underpin Nvidia's AI-driven computing systems. Notably, Nvidia participated as an investor in this funding round, which also attracted a myriad of venture capital firms, private equity investors, and hedge funds. The funding was spearheaded by Atreides Management, established by former Fidelity investor Gavin Baker, along with contributions from well-known financial entities like Apollo Global Management and T. Rowe Price. SiFive's business strategy mirrors that of Arm in its earlier years, focusing on licensing its chip designs rather than manufacturing the chips themselves. This approach allows clients to tailor the designs to their specific needs. Interestingly, while Arm has recently shifted its model by producing its first AI chip in collaboration with Meta, SiFive maintains its unique position as a proponent of open, non-proprietary chip designs. After a funding hiatus since March 2022, when it raised $175 million at a $2.33 billion pre-money valuation, SiFive is now poised to expand its offerings into AI data center CPUs. The company’s designs are engineered to be compatible with Nvidia’s CUDA software and NVLink Fusion, which facilitates the integration of various CPUs into Nvidia's powerful computing ecosystem. As competition intensifies among chip manufacturers like Intel and AMD, Nvidia’s backing of SiFive represents a strategic investment in an innovative startup leveraging an entirely different technology approach.
