Sierra, the ambitious AI startup founded by Bret Taylor, has successfully raised a staggering $950 million in its latest funding round, spearheaded by Tiger Global and GV. This impressive capital influx elevates the company's valuation to over $15 billion, equipping Sierra with more than $1 billion to enhance its mission of establishing a 'global standard' in AI-driven customer experiences. In a fiercely competitive market, Sierra has been proactive in showcasing its rapid growth. What began with a mere four design partners has now expanded to securing over 40% of the Fortune 50 as clients. The agents operating on Sierra's platform are already managing billions of customer interactions, addressing tasks ranging from mortgage refinancing to processing insurance claims, handling returns, and facilitating nonprofit fundraising efforts. This funding announcement comes on the heels of Sierra's remarkable revenue growth. The company reported achieving $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) last November, followed by a jump to $150 million earlier this February. This rapid progression underscores the urgency felt by enterprises in adopting AI solutions, despite the associated costs. Bret Taylor, who also chairs OpenAI and previously served as co-CEO of Salesforce, has articulated that the optimal outcome of agentic AI is to lower costs and boost revenue for clients. However, he cautions that the initial implementation phase can be quite expensive. This sentiment was echoed by Uber's CTO, Praveen Neppalli Naga, during a recent TechCrunch event, where he admitted that Uber quickly exceeded its AI budget after integrating agentic AI tools last year, though they are beginning to see substantial results. With a workforce of approximately 8,000 engineers, Naga noted that around 10% of the code produced is now generated autonomously, which he emphasized is significant for a company of Uber's size. As a testament to the capabilities of agentic AI, Uber assigned a team to develop a hotel-booking integration, achieving completion in just six months—significantly faster than the typical one-year timeframe. Sierra isn't resting on its laurels; the company has recently expanded its offerings with the launch of Ghostwriter, an innovative 'agent as a service' tool. This feature allows users to describe their requirements in natural language, prompting Ghostwriter to autonomously create and deploy a tailored agent to meet those needs. For Taylor, this tool exemplifies a broader vision he shared at the HumanX conference last month, advocating for a future where employees no longer need to navigate cumbersome enterprise software systems.
