Sierra’s Bret Taylor says the era of clicking buttons is over

Bret Taylor, the co-founder and CEO of Sierra, a startup specializing in customer service AI for businesses, is advocating for a transformative shift in how we engage with software. Recently, Sierra unveiled Ghostwriter, an innovative tool designed to create AI agents tailored for specific tasks. This 'agent as a service' concept aims to replace conventional click-based applications with a more intuitive natural language interface. Users can simply articulate their needs, prompting Ghostwriter to autonomously generate and deploy an agent capable of fulfilling the request. Taylor emphasizes that many existing enterprise tools are underutilized, pointing out that employees often only interact with platforms like Workday during onboarding or for annual benefits enrollment. He argues that the future lies in using natural language to accomplish tasks without the need to navigate intricate software interfaces. "I genuinely believe that’s the direction we’re headed," Taylor stated during his address at the HumanX conference in San Francisco. Sierra is already harnessing Ghostwriter's capabilities to launch agents at remarkable speeds, having developed a solution for Nordstrom in just four weeks. After achieving a remarkable $100 million annual revenue run rate in under two years since its inception, Sierra was valued at $10 billion following a $350 million funding round led by Greenoaks Capital last September. Taylor noted that most companies are not interested in creating software; they seek effective solutions to their challenges. However, despite the potential for a major evolution in software interactions, various technologists and investors caution that the current implementation of AI agents is not yet fully autonomous. Many firms, including Sierra and legal AI startup Harvey, still rely on skilled engineers to continually refine and update these AI agents to ensure they function correctly.
