Shopify is preparing for AI shopping agents to change everything, exec says

Shopify is gearing up for a significant evolution in the shopping experience, as shared by its president, Harley Finkelstein, during his remarks at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles. The company, which ranks as the second-largest e-commerce platform in the U.S. after Amazon, is investing heavily in the concept of agentic shopping, aiming to reshape how consumers engage with online retail. Finkelstein highlighted that online purchases currently account for only 18% of retail sales in the U.S., indicating a vast potential for growth. He believes that agentic shopping could serve as a transformative gateway for e-commerce sellers, introducing a new wave of personalized shopping experiences. "We’re planning to implement these agentic applications as personal shoppers for users," he stated, noting that the initial adoption phase would be gradual. These intelligent shopping agents are anticipated to revolutionize the way consumers discover, compare, and purchase products. Finkelstein explained that these agents will provide contextual insights into shopping—something that traditional search engines struggle to achieve. For example, when searching for athletic shoes, he mentioned his preference for the brand On. Rather than directing him to a broad retailer like Footlocker, an agentic shopper would prioritize options from his preferred brand, enhancing the relevance of the search results. While it’s true that current search engines already personalize results based on users' search and browsing histories, the potential of agentic shopping lies in its deeper understanding of individual preferences. Finkelstein acknowledged that social influences still play a role in consumer choices, but emphasized that chat-based applications could serve as more authentic personal shoppers, devoid of commission-driven biases. This approach is particularly beneficial for the many merchants on Shopify who face challenges in getting their products noticed. Finkelstein sees agentic shopping as a vital tool for uncovering new brands and connecting them with customers. In addition to this, Shopify is developing an AI assistant named Sidekick for merchants, alongside an agent designed to resolve customer support inquiries and a protocol to enhance the understanding of merchant data. Finkelstein expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter in commerce, believing it will unlock substantial opportunities not only for large retailers but also for smaller, lesser-known merchants. "We’re incredibly excited about this new era of commerce because it promises to drive significant growth and innovation," he concluded.
