Earlier today, Shopify encountered a significant outage that hampered many merchants, preventing them from completing transactions during one of the year’s peak shopping events. The company's status page confirmed that the issue has been identified and resolved. This disruption was particularly critical, as shoppers were actively seeking deals on Cyber Monday, a day known for its high online traffic and sales. Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, supports millions of businesses in establishing and managing their online stores, accounting for over 10% of all e-commerce transactions in the United States. The technical difficulties began around 6:45 a.m. PT, with reports from various merchants about trouble accessing their Shopify accounts. Additionally, many experienced issues with point-of-sale (POS) systems, which inhibited their ability to process sales effectively. Shopify later reported that the root of the problem lay within its login authentication process, impacting both online account access and POS functionality. Fortunately, the company announced signs of recovery and assured merchants that they would continue to monitor the situation closely. However, merchants were informed that the Help Center was facing longer-than-usual wait times for assistance due to the outage. While the exact number of affected merchants remains unclear, Downdetector, a platform that tracks user-reported issues, noted approximately 4,000 incidents related to the outage.
