Shopify outage: Shopping platform goes down for some users during Cyber Monday

On one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Shopify experienced a significant outage, affecting numerous users and businesses trying to finalize transactions. The Canadian e-commerce giant reported issues on its status page, indicating that certain merchants were struggling to log into their accounts, while others could not access crucial point-of-sale systems that are essential for managing sales and backend operations. By around 12:20 p.m. EST, Shopify acknowledged the situation, stating they were investigating the problems and implementing solutions for the login and administrative issues. A spokesperson for the company directed inquiries to the status page when contacted by CNBC. During the outage, reports on Downdetector indicated that thousands of users were facing difficulties, peaking at around 1:15 p.m. EST when approximately 4,000 issues were logged at 11:00 a.m. EST. Shopify, known for providing software solutions for online merchants and services like advertising and payment processing, plays a vital role in the e-commerce landscape, handling over 10% of all online transactions in the U.S. Initially catering to small businesses and direct-to-consumer brands, Shopify has expanded its platform to accommodate larger retailers, including well-known names like Reebok, Mattel, Barnes & Noble, and Nestle. The timing of this outage was particularly unfortunate, coinciding with Cyber Monday, a day when consumers flock to online stores for discounts. Adobe Analytics predicted that U.S. shoppers would spend around $14.2 billion online on this day, reflecting a 6.3% increase from the previous year. Comparatively, American shoppers had already spent $11.8 billion on Black Friday, marking a notable 9.1% rise year-over-year, according to Adobe.
