CDC tormented: HR workers summoned from furlough to lay off themselves, others

The aftermath of a significant layoff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is causing turmoil among former employees, who refer to the event as a devastating blow to the agency. On Tuesday, both the National Public Health Coalition, a group of laid-off CDC staff, and the union representing its workers addressed the implications of these sweeping cuts on public health and the profound emotional toll on those affected. Typically, federal layoffs, known as reductions in force (RIF), involve a detailed outline of the roles impacted and justifications for the cuts, often citing reasons such as fraud or redundancy. However, the recent actions taken by the Trump administration lacked transparency, leaving current and former staff to piece together the reasons behind these layoffs. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 2883, which advocates for CDC employees, reports that approximately 1,300 employees received termination notices last Friday, branding the move as a politically charged maneuver. In a surprising turn, around 700 of those layoffs were reportedly reversed starting Saturday, with the administration attributing this to a 'coding error.' However, many CDC workers are skeptical of this explanation, believing that the layoffs were deliberate, particularly as some affected included experts crucial for addressing domestic measles outbreaks and those involved in the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite the rescinded notices, approximately 600 layoffs remain in place, leaving uncertainty and concern about the future of the agency's workforce.
