In a startling medical case, Romanian doctors successfully extracted an 11 cm (4.3 inch) living roundworm from a woman's eyelid after it had been incubating for nearly a month. According to a detailed report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the parasite likely originated from a hard lump the woman had initially noticed in her right temple about a month prior. The situation took a dramatic turn when the woman observed that the nodule had disappeared just a day before the worm made its unexpected journey to her eyelid. Concerned, she visited an ophthalmologist the following day, where doctors quickly identified a 'mobile lesion' on her eyelid, resembling a coiled worm beneath the skin, accompanied by some redness and swelling. Upon extraction, the medical team identified the worm as Dirofilaria repens, a parasite that typically spreads through mosquito bites. While this parasite primarily targets dogs and can also infect wild canids like wolves and foxes, it occasionally affects cats. In these animals, the larvae introduced via mosquito bites develop into adult worms beneath the skin, producing tiny larvae known as microfilariae that enter the bloodstream, thus allowing mosquitoes to perpetuate the cycle. Humans, however, are considered dead-end hosts for this parasite. Although the larvae can develop under human skin, they seldom lead to the production of microfilariae in the blood. In this case, the woman's infection manifested as a nodule or a wandering worm beneath her skin. The doctors noted that she was a dog owner, which may explain her exposure to the parasite.
