In a notable departure from previous trends, Indian consumers are increasingly favoring premium electronics and home appliances, according to insights from Amazon's Great Summer Sale 2026. Traditionally, first-time buyers would start with budget-friendly products before upgrading over time. However, data reveals a significant shift in purchasing behavior, as many are now opting for high-end gadgets right from the start. Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India, highlighted this trend, stating, "Indian consumers are not just buying more, they are buying better." The data underscores a growing preference for quality over cost, with first-time buyers of laptops and tablets showing dramatic increases in premium purchases. During the sale, premium tablets saw a staggering growth of up to 15 times, while premium laptops exhibited a nine-fold increase compared to the previous year. This change is reflective of a broader consumer mentality, where specifications, longevity, and AI-driven functionalities are prioritized over lower prices. The smartphone market is experiencing a similar phenomenon, with the value of premium smartphones doubling year-on-year due to a surge in popularity among devices priced between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000. This segment is appealing to consumers seeking advanced features without stepping into the ultra-high-end price range. Moreover, the trend extends to AI-powered home appliances, which are gaining traction among Indian households. Amazon reports that this category now accounts for one-third of appliance sales on its platform, with over 75% of these being AI-integrated products like smart air conditioners and refrigerators. Khan noted that the launch of the consumer electronics AI Store earlier this year has aligned perfectly with this growing consumer interest. Home entertainment also reflects this premiumization trend, as consumers are upgrading to larger televisions and advanced display technologies. The demand for TVs sized 55 inches and above surged, with sales doubling during the sale event. Interestingly, this shift is not confined to metropolitan areas. Cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Visakhapatnam, and Secunderabad are exhibiting consumption patterns similar to those in major urban centers. "These cities are choosing the same higher-spec, AI-powered products as the metros," Khan explained. Amazon attributes this evolution not only to financing options like exchange offers and no-cost EMIs but also to a fundamental change in consumer attitudes. Buyers are increasingly willing to invest upfront for superior technology experiences and the promise of long-term value, marking a significant transformation in the Indian electronics market.
