This fall, a notable trend emerged across UC campuses: for the first time since the dot-com crash, computer science (CS) enrollment experienced a decline, dropping by 6% this year following a 3% decrease in 2024. This revelation, reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, unfolds against a backdrop of a 2% increase in overall national college enrollment, as per data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. It appears that students are increasingly turning away from traditional CS degrees, with UC San Diego standing out as an exception by introducing a dedicated AI major this fall. While some might view this downturn as a temporary phenomenon linked to reports of fewer CS graduates securing employment, it likely signals a deeper shift in educational priorities—a shift that China is embracing with enthusiasm. As highlighted by MIT Technology Review last July, Chinese universities have proactively integrated AI literacy into their curriculums, viewing AI as an essential component of education rather than a potential disruption. Nearly 60% of students and faculty in China utilize AI tools daily, with institutions like Zhejiang University mandating AI coursework and prestigious universities such as Tsinghua establishing new interdisciplinary AI colleges. In contrast, U.S. universities are racing to adapt. In the past two years, numerous institutions have launched AI-focused programs. MIT now boasts an “AI and decision-making” major as its second-largest, while the University of South Florida welcomed over 3,000 students into its new AI and cybersecurity college this fall. The University at Buffalo also made strides by opening an “AI and Society” department, attracting over 200 applicants before its official launch. However, the transition is not without its challenges. UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Lee Roberts recently described a varied response among faculty regarding AI integration, with some embracing the change and others remaining resistant. Despite facing pushback, Roberts is advocating for a stronger AI focus, even appointing a vice provost dedicated to this initiative. He noted, “No one’s going to tell students that using AI is a bad thing,” contrasting the reality faced by some students who encounter skepticism from faculty. Parental influence is also shaping this evolving landscape. David Reynaldo, who manages the admissions consultancy College Zoom, reported that parents who once encouraged their children to pursue CS are now steering them towards majors perceived to be less vulnerable to AI automation, like mechanical and electrical engineering. Enrollment statistics reflect this shift, with a survey from the Computing Research Association indicating that 62% of computing programs saw a drop in undergraduate enrollments this fall. Conversely, AI programs are thriving. Institutions such as the University of Southern California, Columbia University, Pace University, and New Mexico State University are all set to introduce new AI degrees in the coming fall. This trend suggests that students are not abandoning technology altogether; rather, they are gravitating towards programs that emphasize AI. While the long-term implications of this shift remain uncertain, it signals a critical moment for university administrators who have been grappling with the integration of AI in education. The conversation surrounding the ban of ChatGPT has become a relic of the past; the pressing question now is whether American universities can adapt swiftly enough or risk seeing students migrate to institutions that already have effective solutions in place.
