The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is forcing college students to reconsider their academic choices, according to a new survey from Gallup and the Lumina Foundation. Approximately 16% of students—one in six—reported changing their major due to AI's growing influence on the job market. This survey, which included around 3,800 students, revealed that nearly half (47%) have contemplated switching fields for similar reasons. Dr. Courtney Brown, vice president of impact and planning at Lumina Foundation, highlighted this trend as a significant indication that students are actively reevaluating their future prospects in light of AI advancements. The survey found that students enrolled in technology and vocational studies are particularly affected, with about 70% expressing interest in changing their majors. In contrast, those studying healthcare and natural sciences are less likely to feel the same pressure. Among the 16% who switched majors, the report indicated that 26% transitioned to social sciences, 17% to business, and 13% to technology. Brown noted the dual pathways students are exploring: some are drawn to tech fields out of optimism for AI opportunities, while others are pivoting away due to fears of job disruption. The findings align with a separate Niche report, revealing that students are gravitating towards AI-related fields, such as software engineering, rather than traditional programming roles, which are increasingly viewed as susceptible to automation. Interest in AI within computer science education has surged, rising from 1.7% in 2023 to 4.7% by 2026, while traditional programming's share has diminished from 14% to 10% over the same period. The research also indicated that students in the humanities, healthcare, and natural sciences are among the least likely to switch their majors due to AI. Brown reassured that students in these fields might not see AI as a direct threat to their studies, especially as English majors have seen a resurgence and universities are integrating AI discussions into liberal arts curricula. As industries transform rapidly and AI reshapes job landscapes, the decision of selecting a college major has never seemed more critical. Yet, a degree alone may not be the definitive factor for success. A recent HireVue report indicated that while 79% of entry-level positions still require a bachelor's degree, nearly 70% of employers are embracing skills-based hiring practices. In fact, over a quarter of organizations in the U.S. are considering relaxing degree requirements to tap into a broader talent pool. Economist Allison Shrivastava from Niche remarked that the shift in student interest towards AI development is a promising sign of adaptability within the workforce. "That's efficient sorting," she stated, emphasizing its importance in preparing for future labor market needs.
