Exclusive first look at Shield AI's new AI-piloted fighter drone

Shield AI is poised to transform the defense landscape with its latest innovation, the X-Bat, an autonomous fighter jet that promises to redefine aerial combat. Following a substantial $240 million funding round, which has boosted its valuation to $5.3 billion, the company is set to showcase this cutting-edge technology on Wednesday. The X-Bat, equipped with a jet engine, boasts an impressive range of 2,000 miles and can soar to altitudes of 50,000 feet. Its vertical takeoff and landing capabilities allow it to operate in challenging environments, such as on ships in open waters, without the need for a traditional runway. The aircraft will be controlled by Shield AI's proprietary AI software, Hivemind, which is central to the company's strategy moving forward. "The software is integral to our operations and will drive our long-term growth," stated Gary Steele, CEO of Shield AI. With the X-Bat, the company aims to merge state-of-the-art technology within the defense sector, claiming to be on track to manufacture this advanced aircraft at a cost of around $27 million—a fraction of the price compared to existing military jets, such as the F-35, which exceeds $100 million. Unlike Shield AI's previous models, the X-Bat is specifically designed for combat scenarios and can be outfitted with missiles. Steele emphasized the potential to enhance safety for service members by reducing the necessity of placing personnel in harm's way. Founded in 2015, Shield AI has already established significant contracts, including a nearly $200 million deal with the U.S. Coast Guard for another drone model, the V-Bat. However, competition remains fierce in a market dominated by giants like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, as well as the rising startup Anduril, valued at over $30 billion. Although Shield AI has seen swift growth, it has yet to reach profitability, with projections suggesting it may become profitable by 2025, despite a setback from an incident during a drone demonstration that raised safety concerns. As the use of drones in warfare becomes increasingly prevalent, especially highlighted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the demand for advanced drone technologies is surging. Experts acknowledge the tactical significance of drones in modern warfare, with calls for greater U.S. involvement in this domain. In response to this, the U.S. government has initiated efforts to enhance drone capabilities through an executive order aimed at fostering innovation in drone technologies and integrating them into the national airspace. Shield AI is determined to collaborate with major defense contractors to ensure they can leverage AI autonomy effectively, fulfilling the evolving needs of military operations and bolstering national defense strategies.
