Betting on Shenzhen over Silicon Valley

Greetings from Beijing! In the latest edition of The China Connection, we delve into the dynamic relationship between U.S. businesses and Chinese tech manufacturers, a connection that remains strong despite geopolitical tensions. A key player in this narrative is Joshua Woodard, an MIT graduate who has made a bold decision to leave Apple and lead a supply chain management firm, The Sparrows, right in Shenzhen. Woodard is confident that Shenzhen’s factories will continue to play a pivotal role in global technology sales over the next decade. "Many of our clients come from the U.S.," he shared, highlighting the buzz surrounding innovations in smartphone design and AI interaction. He expressed skepticism about other countries like India and Vietnam posing significant competition in the near future. "Outside the geopolitical sphere, there is a genuine desire to create tangible products, and for that, China remains irreplaceable," he asserted. Shenzhen has been a manufacturing powerhouse for Apple since the company established a robust base there over twenty years ago, largely thanks to Foxconn. The region is home to major consumer electronics companies, including DJI and Huawei, as well as the electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. Will Wang, CEO of Even Realties and another former Apple employee, echoed Woodard’s sentiments, emphasizing the logistical advantages of being in Shenzhen. "If we aim to innovate in consumer electronics, we need to be at the heart of hardware production here," he stated during a recent CNBC interview. Trade statistics further illustrate the vital link between Silicon Valley and Shenzhen. According to California’s chamber of commerce, last year, China was the state’s largest source of imports, despite a decline attributed to increasing tariffs. Computer and electronic products made up around 36% of these imports. Notably, Shenzhen accounted for nearly 19% of China’s advanced tech exports last year, as per CNBC’s analysis of data from Wind Information. Lian Jye Su, a chief analyst at Omdia, noted that Chinese suppliers are increasingly crucial in niche technological sectors, particularly in humanoid robotics. While traditional robotics manufacturers still rely on components from countries like Japan and Germany, the landscape is changing. Woodard highlighted the cost-efficiency of operating in Shenzhen, where expenses are reduced by approximately two-thirds and prototype development time is cut to mere days. This environment allows startups to work closely with seasoned suppliers, aiding rapid market entry. However, there are dissenting voices regarding the reliance on Chinese manufacturing. Fady Saad, a Boston-based partner at Cybernetix Ventures, argued for the importance of proximity to end users and the need to mitigate geopolitical risks. His firm, which supports multiple companies across North America and Europe, emphasizes diversified supply chain strategies. For instance, U.S. robotics company Agility reports that only 1% of its components come from China, while the majority are sourced domestically. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s collaboration with China’s Unitree reflects a growing interest in leveraging Chinese capabilities within the AI sector. As the demand for innovative hardware intensifies, experts like Annabelle Yu Long from BAI Capital observe a slowdown in the shift away from Chinese supply chains. "There’s a recognition of China’s role in driving efficiency and innovation," she concluded. In other news, China has issued warnings regarding AI security risks linked to Anthropic's Claude Code, while recent economic indicators show a rise in factory-gate prices. As U.S. companies increasingly tap into Chinese AI models, the landscape of global technology continues to evolve dramatically.
