Tech firms to showcase AI innovations in a China under US sanctions

This weekend, Shanghai will serve as the gathering point for a diverse array of tech companies looking to showcase their advancements in artificial intelligence. As U.S. sanctions loom over the industry, both established giants and emerging startups from China will play a prominent role at the two-day World AI Conference. Notable Chinese firms, including industry leaders like Huawei and Alibaba, will be in attendance, alongside innovative startups eager to make their mark. The conference will also see participation from Western companies such as Tesla, Alphabet, and Amazon, illustrating the ongoing global interest in AI technologies. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to open the conference, underscoring the significance of AI within the national development strategy of China. The country aims to solidify its position as a global leader in AI by the year 2030, making advancements in this sector a focal point of its technological ambitions. This drive has intensified the rivalry with the U.S., as both nations vie for supremacy in cutting-edge technologies. The Trump administration previously implemented export controls targeting advanced technologies, including AI chips, citing national security concerns linked to potential military enhancements by Beijing. Despite these challenges, China has continued to achieve notable milestones in AI, prompting scrutiny from U.S. officials. In a striking development, the Chinese startup DeepSeek has disrupted the global AI landscape by introducing a cost-effective model that competes with renowned U.S. systems like those from OpenAI, yet is produced at a fraction of the cost. Jensen Huang, the CEO of AI chip leader Nvidia, praised the capabilities of Chinese firms such as DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Tencent, labeling their AI models as “world class” during a recent visit to Beijing. The upcoming AI forum is anticipated to feature over 800 participating companies, showcasing more than 3,000 high-tech products, including 40 large language models, 50 AI-driven devices, and 60 intelligent robots. Alongside major industry players, the event will also highlight innovative startups, such as Unitree, a company specializing in humanoid robots.
