ServiceNow CEO says AI is reorienting the global economy

Bill McDermott, the CEO of ServiceNow, recently highlighted the profound changes that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing to the global economy. In an engaging discussion following the company's third-quarter earnings report, McDermott, who previously led SAP, addressed how AI is reshaping job markets, driving a surge in AI-related expenditures, and posing challenges to the software industry. The recent wave of layoffs at Amazon has reignited discussions regarding AI's influence on employment. McDermott emphasized that AI's advancements are destined to transform the economy fundamentally, stating, "AI is going to reorient the global economy." He noted that consumers are already enjoying the benefits of sophisticated AI chatbots and models that provide answers in innovative ways. However, he believes enterprises, including corporations and government agencies, will soon realize even greater advantages. Describing this technological revolution as possibly the "biggest breakthrough in enterprise technology in half a century," McDermott explained how generative AI is prompting ServiceNow to increase hiring in targeted areas and to retrain existing employees. He posed a thought-provoking question: "What good is AI if it doesn't serve the greater good of people?" This philosophy drives ServiceNow’s strategy to utilize AI to support its workforce while expanding its hiring in sales, design, and engineering roles. Amidst a backdrop of substantial investment in AI infrastructure, McDermott acknowledged the pressing question of whether such financial commitments are yielding tangible returns. He pointed out that many digital transformation initiatives often fail, with approximately 95% of early corporate AI projects not achieving a return on investment. However, he assured stakeholders that ServiceNow is designed to simplify the complexities of implementing new AI projects, describing the platform as a "single, clean pane of glass" that integrates across various functions and manages outdated data structures. Despite concerns regarding the potential for generative AI to enable companies to develop their own software solutions rather than purchasing from vendors like ServiceNow, McDermott remained confident. He asserted, "No, they can't duplicate what they took 20 years to build," emphasizing that ServiceNow's comprehensive suite of enterprise features remains unmatched. ServiceNow's performance remains robust, with a reported subscription revenue of $3.3 billion for the third quarter—a 22% increase year-over-year. The company has also raised its full-year guidance in response to a growing demand for its AI-enhanced offerings. McDermott attributed this success to businesses increasingly integrating ServiceNow's AI capabilities into their operations. Furthermore, ServiceNow's CFO revealed that several AI products have surpassed internal expectations, demonstrating strong adoption rates among both new and existing clients. As ServiceNow continues to innovate and form strategic partnerships, including collaborations with Nvidia and FedEx, the integration of AI into enterprise workflows appears set to deepen, further solidifying the company's position in the evolving landscape of technology.
