Sequoia partner spreads debunked Brown shooting theory, testing new leadership

Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital, is under fire once more for making unfounded claims regarding a Palestinian student’s alleged involvement in the December 13 mass shooting at Brown University, which also resulted in the death of an MIT professor. In posts that have since been removed from X, Maguire suggested that the student was likely the shooter, citing Brown University's actions to obscure the student's online presence as suspicious. However, authorities have confirmed that the shooter was Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old from Portugal, who was later found deceased in a storage facility in New Hampshire. Brown University clarified that the removal of the student's digital footprint was a precautionary measure against harmful speculation. Fast Company has since republished some of Maguire's deleted posts, including earlier comments where he implied that the MIT professor was targeted due to his Jewish identity. This incident is not isolated; it follows a series of controversial remarks made by Maguire, including an inflammatory comment about New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, which sparked significant backlash and prompted nearly 1,200 tech leaders to sign an open letter demanding action from Sequoia. The recent controversy raises important questions about the ability of Sequoia's new leadership, comprising managing partners Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, to address Maguire's provocative social media behavior. Sumaiya Balbale, the firm's chief operating officer, departed in August, reportedly due to Sequoia’s inaction regarding Maguire's anti-Muslim comments. Former managing partner Roelof Botha, who left in November, previously defended Maguire's outspoken nature, emphasizing Sequoia's commitment to free speech and diversity of opinion within the firm. Maguire's investment portfolio includes numerous defense technology and AI startups, with strong ties to notable companies associated with Elon Musk, such as Neuralink and SpaceX. Botha acknowledged that Maguire's candidness could have consequences, a sentiment echoed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has called for his dismissal, labeling his remarks as “deeply irresponsible and incredibly dangerous.” Inquiries have been made to Sequoia for their stance on the matter.
