Sequoia Capital is doubling down on its commitment to early-stage investing, unveiling two new funds totaling $950 million amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding a potential AI bubble. Bogomil Balkansky, a partner on Sequoia's early-stage investment team, emphasized that their strategy remains steadfast, unaffected by market fluctuations. "Markets go up and down, but our focus is unwavering. We seek out visionary founders who possess the potential to create transformative businesses," he stated. The announcement includes a $750 million fund aimed at Series A startups and a $200 million seed fund, closely mirroring the sizes of funds launched three years prior. This move comes after a challenging period for Sequoia, which restructured in 2021 to an evergreen main fund alongside strategy-specific sub-funds. This change was designed to allow the firm to maintain stakes in its portfolio companies beyond their initial public offerings. Sequoia faced significant setbacks in late 2022, with a loss exceeding $200 million from its investment in the now-collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, followed by a 2023 split from its operations in India and China. However, the firm, known for its early backing of major companies like Airbnb, Google, and Nvidia, is now refocusing on its primary mission: supporting promising founders during the formative stages of their ventures. Balkansky reiterated the firm’s dedication to identifying and nurturing talent early on, stating, "Our goal has always been to engage with these founders as soon as possible and actively participate in their development journey." With AI startup valuations soaring, Sequoia aims to leverage the new funds to invest in exceptional founders at the outset of their startup journeys, allowing the firm to acquire significant ownership at favorable prices. This strategy is particularly vital in today’s rapidly changing landscape, as early investments are crucial to securing advantageous stakes. Sequoia's recent seed and Series A investments in companies like Clay and Temporal have already seen significant returns amid the AI surge. Balkansky also noted that Sequoia is committed to reinforcing its legacy by investing even earlier, frequently in pre-seed opportunities. The firm has made notable investments in emerging companies such as security tester Xbow and AI reliability engineer Traversal, which have attracted considerable funding at elevated valuations. Behind the scenes, Sequoia has facilitated connections and strategic support for its portfolio companies, including placing a former Databricks CRO on Xbow’s board and arranging crucial meetings that led to significant investments. As Sequoia strives to maintain its five-decade legacy as a leading Silicon Valley investor, the firm has instituted a new office reminder: "We are only as good as our next investment."
