David Heinemeier Hansson, the visionary behind Ruby on Rails, asserts that the current landscape of AI-driven development is favoring seasoned developers. In a recent interview with 'The Pragmatic Engineer' podcast, he emphasized that the most substantial advancements at 37signals have been led by these experienced individuals. "The most successful and applicable agent acceleration that I've seen at 37 Signals has been from the most senior people, who can assess whether the AI-generated output is appropriate for deployment to a large audience," he articulated. Hansson pointed out a significant gap in the capabilities of junior developers, stating that they often lack the necessary experience to evaluate the trustworthiness of AI-produced code. "In critical scenarios, we cannot depend solely on AI agents, as junior programmers typically cannot determine the reliability of the output," he explained. At 37signals, Hansson highlighted that senior engineers excel in collaborating with multiple AI agents simultaneously. They possess the expertise to scrutinize the quality of the output with high confidence, enabling them to redirect the agents when necessary, a skill that defines their seniority. As an illustration of potential pitfalls, he referenced Amazon's challenges with its internal coding tool, Kiro. Reports have indicated that Amazon is implementing a 90-day temporary safety guideline requiring dual reviews of engineers’ work before making changes that could directly affect consumers. Earlier this year, Hansson remarked that AI had not yet matched the capabilities of a junior engineer, though it was showing promise. Now, he asserts, "My daily work is agent-first on everything."
