In light of the increasing productivity touted by AI companies, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is calling for a shift in how the tech industry compensates workers. During a recent conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan, Sanders emphasized that the advantages gained from AI should directly benefit employees rather than just corporate executives. Sanders argues that the time saved through the implementation of AI tools should translate into more family time for workers, suggesting a reduction in the standard work week to 32 hours. "Technology should enhance our lives, not just the wealth of technology owners and CEOs," he declared. This idea, while appealing to many, could provoke concern among traditional business leaders who prioritize continuous shareholder profit. The senator's proposal challenges the notion that increased efficiency must result in job cuts. Instead, he envisions a scenario where workers can finish their tasks in less time, retaining their salaries, and hopefully freeing up time to engage in personal activities like attending their children's sports events. Sanders noted that this approach isn't merely theoretical, as various companies worldwide have successfully implemented shorter work weeks. In the UK, for example, 61 companies with approximately 2,900 employees participated in a pilot program for a four-day work week in late 2022. Notably, among 23 businesses that disclosed their financial outcomes, there was an average revenue increase of 1.4% throughout the trial. Further backing his claims, Sanders pointed to the success of companies like Kickstarter, which has embraced a four-day work week since 2021, and Microsoft Japan, which experienced a remarkable 40% productivity boost during its 2019 trial. "Let’s leverage technology to improve the lives of workers," Sanders stated. "This means providing more time for family, friends, and personal development, allowing individuals to pursue what truly matters to them."
