Crypto bill talks picking up in Senate after clearing a key vote, Sen. Boozman says

The Senate Agriculture Committee is intensifying discussions on a cryptocurrency market structure bill, according to Chairman John Boozman, R-Ark. He expressed optimism about reaching a consensus this year, even as Democratic support for the bill presented by his committee has waned. In an interview with CNBC, Boozman noted the committee's progress in establishing a regulatory framework under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for the fast-evolving crypto sector. The next critical step involves the Senate Banking Committee, which must approve its own version of the legislation. A hearing on this text was recently postponed, reflecting pushback from the crypto industry. Last year, Boozman collaborated with Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., on a draft of the bill. However, Booker has since distanced himself from the latest version, citing significant differences from the bipartisan framework discussed previously. In a recent hearing, he raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, particularly in light of President Donald Trump's involvement in the crypto space. Despite the challenges, Boozman assured that negotiations with Democratic colleagues have continued unabated. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address the complexities of the crypto market. During a meeting led by Trump's crypto advisor, Patrick Witt, banking and crypto executives discussed contentious issues, particularly the provision allowing digital asset companies to offer stablecoin rewards. Banks have expressed concerns that these rewards resemble interest payments, a practice prohibited under existing legislation. Industry insiders reported that some banks remain resistant to compromise on this matter. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has voiced strong opposition to the Senate Banking Committee's draft, arguing that it could eliminate rewards for stablecoins and hinder competition. As discussions progress, the White House has set a deadline for reaching a consensus on stablecoin yields by the end of the month. Participants in the banking sector have stated their commitment to ensuring that any legislation safeguards the financial system's integrity while fostering the development of digital asset policies. Boozman recognized the debate surrounding stablecoin rewards as a significant point of contention, but he remains hopeful about finding a compromise that satisfies both the crypto and banking industries. His commitment to collaborative problem-solving underscores the urgency of establishing a coherent regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
