A French Navy officer accidentally leaked the location of an aircraft carrier by logging his run on Strava

In a concerning incident, a French Navy officer inadvertently revealed the location of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier while logging a run on the deck and posting it to Strava. This slip-up occurred as the vessel made its way towards the Middle East, as reported by French newspaper Le Monde. This incident underscores ongoing privacy concerns associated with Strava, a popular fitness tracking platform that has previously faced scrutiny for its default public account settings. When users log workouts, their routes are automatically shared, which has led to the exposure of military bases and sensitive locations around the world. In a notable previous case, Le Monde revealed that the movements of French President Emmanuel Macron were tracked through the Strava accounts of his bodyguards, who had publicly shared their workout data while accompanying him. While the deployment of the aircraft carrier was publicly announced, the precise location details pose a significant risk to military operations. A spokesperson for the French Armed Forces stated that the officer's actions were inconsistent with established protocols, which sailors are routinely reminded of. Strava has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this incident, emphasizing the importance of privacy settings for all users, not just those in the military.
