WhatsApp has officially launched a new feature allowing users to reserve unique usernames, enhancing privacy by enabling connections without disclosing phone numbers. With a vast user base that includes many individuals with similar names, this development aims to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to claim their desired username before the full rollout. Kunal Shah, a representative from WhatsApp, took to X to share the news, emphasizing the importance of timing. He stated, "Joined WhatsApp early enough to claim my username before we release this to the world. Time to get yours." To reserve your WhatsApp username, follow these straightforward steps: First, ensure your app is updated via the Android Play Store or iOS App Store. Next, open WhatsApp and navigate to the “Settings” section. Click on “Account,” then select “Username” to choose your preferred username before someone else does. It’s important to note that the username feature is optional; users can continue using the app solely with their phone numbers if they prefer. Moreover, WhatsApp has clarified that usernames cannot be searched or browsed like on some social media platforms, meaning users must know the exact username to initiate contact. Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a new layer of privacy with a username key, requiring users to input both a username and a key to start conversations. This feature is gradually being rolled out, with many users expected to have access to username reservations within the week. However, the complete username functionality is anticipated to be available later this year. Reports indicate that both iPhone and Android users have begun receiving notifications about username reservations, while others may still be waiting for the feature to arrive in future updates.
