US uncovers 100,000 SIM cards that could have “shut down” NYC cell network

In a startling revelation, the US Secret Service has uncovered an extensive operation involving over 100,000 SIM cards, large enough to potentially disrupt New York City's cellular network. Authorities suspect that a nation-state may be behind this intricate setup. The agency reported finding more than 300 co-located SIM servers and a staggering number of SIM cards at various locations throughout the city. Photographs of the seized equipment showcase elaborate 'SIM boxes' equipped with numerous antennas and organized on six-shelf racks. These SIM boxes are typically associated with fraudulent activities. Further inspection revealed towers of neatly arranged SIM card packaging, indicating significant effort went into establishing this operation. This discovery is part of an ongoing investigation into anonymous telephonic threats directed at several senior US government officials. However, the capabilities of this system suggest intentions that extend beyond mere threats. The Secret Service indicated that the setup could facilitate a range of malicious activities, including disabling cell towers, conducting denial-of-service attacks, and allowing secure, encrypted communication for potential criminals. While a thorough analysis of the seized devices will take time, initial findings point towards involvement from 'nation-state threat actors,' suggesting international espionage. With the UN General Assembly currently underway in New York, the timing of this discovery raises concerns that the operation may have been aimed at monitoring or disrupting international delegates. Reports indicate that the equipment was seized from abandoned apartment buildings and various sites up to 35 miles from the UN. Although the operation has been dismantled, investigations are still ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time.
