SEC eyes shift to twice-yearly earnings reports

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is contemplating a significant shift in how public companies disclose their earnings. A new proposal could allow these companies to file earnings reports just twice a year instead of the traditional quarterly basis, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Discussions surrounding this potential change have gained momentum over the past year, with many companies expressing frustration over the high costs and logistical challenges associated with quarterly earnings preparation. Advocates for the adjustment argue that easing the reporting requirements could incentivize more firms to go public, as the burden of maintaining a public company status would be less daunting. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, along with support from President Trump, has shown enthusiasm for this proposed revision. According to the Journal, the SEC has initiated talks with stock exchanges regarding the next steps, although any alterations to the current requirements are still in the early stages of deliberation. If the SEC proceeds with its proposal, which may be unveiled in the coming weeks, it will enter a public comment phase before any formal vote takes place. There's a historical precedent for such a move; approximately ten years ago, both the European Union and the United Kingdom shifted away from mandatory quarterly reports in favor of semiannual disclosures. Despite this change, many companies in those regions continue to opt for quarterly reporting voluntarily.
