Bounce introduces a tool to move your Mastodon account to Bluesky

Bounce, a pioneering tool aimed at enhancing social media account portability across various open platforms, is set to revolutionize the way users interact between Mastodon and Bluesky. On October 20, the creators of Bounce will unveil Bounce 2, a beta version that empowers users to migrate or merge their Mastodon social graph into a Bluesky profile. This innovative feature allows for bidirectional movement, meaning users can easily shift between Mastodon and Bluesky without losing their connections. The goal is to provide users with the flexibility to change platforms without feeling trapped by a single service's policies or development trajectory. Originally introduced in August by the nonprofit organization A New Social, Bounce is part of a broader initiative to enhance accessibility and functionality across the open social web. This ecosystem encompasses various protocols, such as ActivityPub, which powers platforms like Mastodon and Threads, and the AT Protocol, which forms the backbone of Bluesky. To bridge the gap between these differing technologies, tools like Bounce have emerged, allowing users to maintain their networks regardless of the platform they choose. Bounce builds upon technology initially developed for Bridgy Fed, facilitating visibility of users' profiles across both Mastodon and Bluesky. With the launch of Bounce 2, users can now transfer their social graphs from Mastodon to Bluesky, or integrate them into an existing bridged profile. However, the process varies depending on the direction of the move. Notably, if a user is transitioning from Bluesky to Mastodon, their follower lists will merge rather than replace. Conversely, moving from Mastodon to Bluesky will not carry over original posts and content. A New Social emphasizes that platforms like Bluesky and Mastodon should serve as gateways to the open social web rather than confining ecosystems. They advocate for user autonomy, allowing individuals to choose the technologies that best meet their needs while maintaining connections with their communities, regardless of their platform preferences. Bounce 2 is set to launch soon, with support options available through the nonprofit's Patreon and merchandise store.
