A worrying situation has arisen as flesh-eating screwworm larvae have reportedly entered the United States, specifically in Maryland, through the flesh of an individual returning from El Salvador. The case, confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on August 4, has raised concerns about the potential economic and health impacts of this parasite. Andrew Nixon, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, emphasized that while this incident is alarming, it does not mark the first instance of such larvae in the U.S. The screwworms are endemic to various regions in South America and the Caribbean, and cases related to travel have been documented in the U.S. before, including several in recent years. Experts at the CDC have pointed out that the overall risk to public health remains very low. However, the presence of these screwworms near the U.S.-Mexico border is now a significant concern. The larvae were once eradicated from the U.S. following a comprehensive campaign that began in the 1950s. This campaign involved the release of sterile male flies to control the population. Despite these efforts, in 2022, the screwworms breached containment barriers and have been moving northward through Central America. With the threat now just 370 miles from Texas, both state and federal agencies are actively preparing for the possibility of an invasion, which includes plans to establish a sterile fly facility in Texas to combat the potential spread.
