In a significant response to recent government actions, over 50 prominent scientific and medical organizations have come together to voice their opposition to an executive order issued by the Trump administration. This order seeks to impose political oversight on grant funding, impacting federally supported research initiatives across the nation. The executive order introduces a troubling layer of political control over the announcement of new funding opportunities and the approval process for individual grants. In a letter addressed to Congress, the coalition expressed serious concerns regarding the implications of these provisions, urging lawmakers to safeguard the longstanding independent, merit-based peer-review system that has been essential for federal grant allocation. Among the order's most controversial stipulations is the requirement for all funding announcements to receive approval from agency heads or their appointees, effectively granting political figures the final say on which scientific areas receive support. Furthermore, individual grants would also necessitate clearance from political appointees, who must ensure that the projects align with the President's policy objectives. Equally alarming, the directive allows agencies to revoke previously awarded grants at any time if they no longer align with agency priorities. Until a framework to enforce these new protocols is established, agencies are prohibited from launching new funding initiatives. This shift threatens to dismantle a system that has underpinned America's scientific leadership for nearly seven decades, as research efforts may now hinge on the fluctuating interests of political appointees lacking relevant expertise.
