Scapia, a fintech startup focused on the travel sector, has successfully raised $63 million in a recent funding round, spearheaded by General Catalyst. This round also saw participation from existing investors such as Peak XV Partners and Z47, bringing the total funding received by the company to $135 million since its inception. Founded in 2022 by Anil Goteti, a former executive from Flipkart, Scapia previously garnered $72 million in earlier funding rounds. The fresh capital is earmarked for expanding its customer outreach throughout India while enhancing its AI-driven offerings and organizational framework. Anil Goteti, the founder and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about General Catalyst joining as a partner, stating that the ongoing support from Peak XV and Z47 validates their vision and progress. Scapia has established itself as a holistic travel ecosystem, with a financial product at its core, catering to a generation of Indians who regard travel as a fundamental aspect of life. The startup has reported a remarkable surge in its operational metrics, with flight bookings increasing five to six times year-on-year and hotel stays soaring eightfold. Notably, bookings from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are contributing significantly to this growth. A significant portion of the newly acquired funding will be directed towards bolstering Scapia's brand visibility and recruiting AI experts across various domains, including engineering, product development, data science, and design. Neeraj Arora, CEO for India and MENA at General Catalyst, emphasized that the next wave of consumer companies in India will emerge from innovative behaviors rather than mere digital adaptations of existing models. He noted that Scapia recognized early that modern Indian travelers require financial products tailored to their travel-centric lifestyle. Additionally, Scapia claims the distinction of being the first company in India to launch a dual-network co-branded credit card that operates on both Visa and RuPay platforms. The startup has also diversified its offerings to include rewards-based UPI payments, exclusive airport privileges, and comprehensive travel booking services, aiming to position itself firmly as a full-service travel fintech platform.
