Scale AI, a prominent player in the data-labeling sector backed by Meta's substantial $14 billion investment, has recently announced cuts to a crucial team responsible for assessing potential risks in artificial intelligence models. On Friday evening, twelve contractors from Scale AI's Red Team received termination notices, as confirmed by several current and former employees who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the situation. The termination emails, which were reviewed by Business Insider, stated that the affected workers were let go due to performance issues deemed below the expected standards. However, Scale AI spokesperson Natalia Montalvo clarified that this action is not indicative of a broader restructuring within the company. She noted that the terminated contractors were part of a 'contingent workforce' and represented only a small portion of the overall Red Team. Despite these cuts, Montalvo assured that ongoing red teaming projects with customers are still active, underscoring Scale's commitment to investing in red teaming services for leading AI firms. However, multiple employees have taken to LinkedIn, describing the situation as layoffs. Two former members of the Red Team indicated that the volume of work for the team has significantly diminished since Meta's investment. A large segment of Scale AI's workforce, including the twelve contractors who were recently let go, consists of employees hired through agencies like HireArt, which issued the termination emails. According to the correspondence, those affected will receive one month of severance pay, although they will not be compensated for any unused paid time off. The email also provided instructions for returning Scale-issued devices or badges. One former Red Team member estimated that the layoffs could represent as much as half of the team's total size. In light of previous workforce reductions, including a 14% cut of full-time staff and 500 contractors in July, these recent changes reflect ongoing challenges at Scale AI, particularly following significant customer losses, such as OpenAI, after Meta's acquisition of a significant stake in the company and the hiring of Scale's CEO, Alexandr Wang. Former employees have noted that due to the declining workload, Red Team members are now being assigned more generalist tasks that stray from their specialized roles aimed at enhancing AI model safety. This shift raises concerns about the future direction and effectiveness of the Red Team's work in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
