FCC chair blasts Amazon after it criticizes SpaceX megaconstellation

In the competitive landscape of satellite communications, disputes over orbital territories and electromagnetic spectrum rights are not uncommon. Recently, tensions have escalated between SpaceX and Amazon, prompting a notable response from the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The current point of contention revolves around SpaceX's application to the FCC, seeking approval for an ambitious plan to launch up to one million satellites as part of a new megaconstellation aimed at providing comprehensive data center services from space. In response, Amazon submitted a petition urging the FCC to reject SpaceX's request, arguing that the proposal lacks a realistic foundation. Amazon, the company established by Jeff Bezos, criticized SpaceX for what it views as an overly ambitious vision. The petition articulated skepticism about the feasibility of deploying such a massive constellation, suggesting that it could take centuries to realize, even with maximum global launch capacity. The rivalry between these two tech giants is not new. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has already successfully launched over 9,000 satellites for its Starlink service. Meanwhile, Amazon has entered the fray with its own low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, having placed around 200 satellites into orbit since its launch efforts began last year. Both initiatives aim to provide broadband services to a diverse range of business and commercial clients. Adding another layer to the competition, Blue Origin, also founded by Bezos, recently unveiled plans for a separate internet constellation named TeraWave, targeting enterprise customers. As the battle for dominance in the satellite communications sector intensifies, all eyes remain on the FCC and the decisions it will make regarding the future of these megaconstellations.
