Sarvam AI becomes unicorn with $234 million funding; HCLTech leads with $150 million

Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based startup, has successfully raised $234 million in the initial phase of its $300 million Series B funding round, officially becoming a unicorn with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. This investment round, which values the company at $1.5 billion post-money, saw HCLTech step in as the primary strategic investor with a substantial $150 million contribution. C Vijayakumar, the CEO and Managing Director of HCLTech, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "Our investment in Sarvam marks a significant step toward building India's trusted and globally competitive AI ecosystem." He added that the collaboration of Sarvam’s AI model research with HCLTech’s global reach is poised to create a comprehensive AI platform tailored for enterprises and governments, enhancing the delivery of secure, scalable, and responsible AI solutions. Founded by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, both experienced professionals from the IIT Madras-based AI initiative AI4Bharat, Sarvam plans to utilize the new funding to train its next-generation AI models. These models will focus on various applications, including coding, cybersecurity, and improving computational access to strengthen its operations across key sectors. "We recognize that research-led innovation for AI that can operate effectively at India’s scale presents a substantial opportunity," co-founder Pratyush Kumar stated. He elaborated that the goal is to develop models that can comprehend local dialects, process documents, and deliver intelligence affordably for both enterprises and government entities. This vision includes creating a complete stack solution for organizations to manage their sovereign AI independently. Sarvam has recently introduced two major AI models, both developed in India from the ground up. The Sarvam 105B model is a large reasoning model that reportedly competes with larger counterparts in terms of knowledge and reasoning capabilities. Meanwhile, Sarvam 30B is specifically optimized for deployment on consumer hardware. Additionally, the company has launched Sarvam Vision, a model designed for handwriting recognition and processing Indian-language documents, which is already facilitating the digitization of over 35 million pages of documents, including insurance forms and land records. Co-founder Vivek Raghavan expressed the ambition to widely disseminate this technology throughout India, generating substantial value across various sectors for citizens, small businesses, and government agencies. He highlighted the collaboration with HCLTech as a prime example of an Indian corporation contributing to foundational advancements in the nation’s AI landscape. Sarvam has not yet revealed the timeline for securing the remaining $66 million of the funding round.
