Autonomous boat startup Saronic raises $1.75 billion in race to modernize U.S. military

Saronic, an innovative startup focused on autonomous maritime vessels, announced on Tuesday that it has successfully raised $1.75 billion to accelerate its production capabilities. This funding round, spearheaded by Kleiner Perkins, has propelled Saronic's valuation to an impressive $9.25 billion, significantly up from the $4 billion mark reached after a $600 million funding boost last year. The new capital will be utilized to enhance the company's supply chain and shipyard operations. Saronic aims to produce over 20 autonomous ships annually by 2027, including the launch of its new shipyard, Port Alpha, located in Texas. CEO Dino Mavrookas highlighted a notable shift in military demand towards unmanned systems that can be produced efficiently and at lower costs compared to traditional vessels. As the U.S. works to improve its maritime capabilities to compete with China's extensive shipbuilding efforts, Saronic's advancements are timely. The current geopolitical climate, particularly the ongoing tensions in Iran and the challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, underscores the necessity for integrating modern technologies into military operations. Mavrookas emphasized that Saronic's vessels are designed to mitigate risks for military personnel operating in hazardous environments, thereby aiding the U.S. in diminishing China's maritime influence. The company aspires to achieve production levels reminiscent of those during World War II. Mavrookas stated, "It's rethinking the entire ship," which involves redesigning vessels for autonomous operation. In recent years, Silicon Valley has invested heavily in defense technology, seeking to shift contracts away from established defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, RTX, and Northrop Grumman. Notably, Saronic has emerged as a leading contender in this space, ranking 19th on CNBC’s latest Disruptor 50 list and securing a $392 million contract with the Navy last year. In a parallel development, autonomous drone company Shield AI recently raised $2 billion, achieving a valuation of $12.7 billion, while other companies like Palantir and Anduril have also thrived under the previous administration's defense initiatives. Based in Austin, Texas, Saronic produces a diverse range of autonomous vessels, including the six-foot-long Spyglass and the 40-metric-ton Marauder. Currently, its main shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana, is undergoing a significant $300 million expansion, with plans to increase production fivefold within the next year.
