Sapiom raises $15M to help AI agents buy their own tech tools

In a world where coding skills are no longer a prerequisite for app development, innovative solutions like vibe coding are gaining traction. These platforms, such as Lovable, transform simple language descriptions into functional code, enabling individuals without technical expertise to prototype applications. However, transitioning from a prototype to a fully operational product poses challenges, particularly when it comes to integrating external services for functionalities like SMS messaging, email, and payment processing through platforms like Stripe. Ilan Zerbib, previously the director of engineering for payments at Shopify, recognized this gap and established Sapiom. This startup aims to create a financial backbone that enables AI agents to securely acquire software, APIs, and computing resources. With Sapiom's technology, AI agents can autonomously execute purchases, streamlining processes that traditionally required human oversight. As each AI interaction with external tools, such as Twilio for SMS services, necessitates authentication and micro-payments, Sapiom's innovations are designed to automate and simplify these transactions. Amit Kumar, a partner at Accel, emphasizes the importance of Sapiom’s focus on enterprise solutions rather than consumer markets. He notes, "If you really think about it, every API call is a payment. Every time you send a text message, it’s a payment. Every time you spin up a server for AWS, it’s a payment." Accel is spearheading Sapiom's recent $15 million seed funding round, which includes contributions from notable investors like Okta Ventures, Gradient Ventures, and Coinbase Ventures. Though Sapiom is still in its early stages, the startup envisions its infrastructure being adopted by vibe-coding companies and other entities developing AI agents capable of performing tasks independently. For instance, users who create apps with SMS features won't need to register for services like Twilio or input payment details manually; Sapiom will manage these processes, charging users only for the services utilized through the respective platforms. Currently focusing on B2B solutions, Sapiom's technology holds the potential to enable personal AI agents to carry out consumer transactions in the future. There's a growing expectation that individuals will come to rely on these agents for independent financial decisions, such as ordering rides or making online purchases. Despite the excitement surrounding this future, Zerbib remains grounded, asserting that simply introducing AI won't inherently drive increased consumer spending, which is why his priority lies in building robust financial frameworks for businesses.
