In a groundbreaking move, Santa Monica is set to become the first city in the United States to implement AI technology in its parking enforcement vehicles to monitor bike lane violations. Starting this April, the city will deploy Hayden AI's advanced scanning systems in seven of its parking enforcement cars, extending the capabilities of similar technology already in use on city buses. Charley Territo, the chief growth officer at Hayden AI, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "The more we can reduce the amount of illegal parking, the safer we can make it for bike riders." This innovative approach aims to enhance safety for cyclists by minimizing obstructions in bike lanes. Hayden AI's technology, which is already operational in two other Californian cities—Oakland and Sacramento—has made its mark across the nation, with installations in major cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. The company recently revealed that it has equipped 2,000 systems on buses globally as of September 2025. In a recent study at the University of California, San Diego, Hayden AI's technology recorded over 1,100 parking violations within just 59 days, with a staggering 88 percent of those incidents involving vehicles blocking bike lanes. The company promotes its systems as a way for municipalities to not only improve bus speeds by clearing obstructions but also to enhance overall safety. Territo remarked, "We do that by reducing one of the biggest causes of collisions with buses—moving out of their lanes. The fewer times they have to make a turn, the fewer instances there are of a crash."
